. Dedicated to the promotion of peace in our world and to strengthening the bonds between all peoples, the US State Department and Japanese Foreign Minister Takeo Masuzoe have agreed in principle to establish an Honorary Consulate General in Fukuoka with the aim of promoting trade, encouraging mutual understanding, and establishing cultural and social ties between Japan and the United States. The development of the Honorary Consulate was started with the signing of a memorandum of understanding in 2009 between the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the U.S. Department of State. The agreement would see the US establish an Honorary Consulate in Fukuoka, which would be the first of its kind in Japan. The Honorary Consulate would operate under the auspices of the US Embassy Tokyo to provide consular services in Japanese on issues of particular interest to the United States. The Consulate General in Tokyo supports its Honorary Consulate General in Fukuoka by providing consular and customs services for Japanese Americans living in Japan..
